A General Guide to the Company.

Exmoor Glass is a small glass studio based at Porlock Weir in Somerset. Here, we are lucky to be surrounded by breathtaking views of both the sea and hills. We make freeblown glass by hand. Our working methods and tools have changed little since Roman times. The purpose of this booklet is to answer some of the questions that we are regularly asked about our work, and to thereby give you a clearer idea of who we are and what we do.

This picture shows our studio. All the pieces of glass that we make start life here as pools of intensely hot molten liquid. Glass studios are hot and dangerous places to work, and glass is a notoriously difficult medium to work in.

It takes about 7 years to become reasonably proficient at blowing glass and much longer to attain the status of Master Glassmaker.

The most popular kind of glass that we produce today is from our Cranberry range. Different colours in glass are achieved by the addition of different metals to molten glass. Cranberry's colour comes from the addition of gold to molten glass making it particularly special and desirable to collectors.
